National Poison Prevention Week: March 15-21, 2015
Over 40,000 people die each year due to poisoning. In 2008, poisoning became the leading cause of injury death in the U.S. Most accidental poisoning can be avoided, which is why National Poison Prevention Week was designated by President Kennedy in 1961. Occurring the third week in March each year, National Poison Prevention Week was organized to encourage local communities to raise awareness of the dangers of unintentional poisonings and to take action to prevent them. Poison Prevention Wristbands can be a part of any event.
Support National Poison Prevention Week with Custom Wristbands
Wristbands with custom messages can help remind parents and others of the dangers of poisons. According to PoisonPrevention.org, there are two basic themes of National Poison Prevention Week: "Children Act Fast...So Do Poisons!" and "Poisoning Spans a Lifetime." These messages would work well on a custom bracelet, along with the poison control center phone number. Or, create your own custom message promoting your local event.
Facts about Poisoning
The poisoning death rate nearly tripled over the past 30 years and the percentage of poisoning deaths that were caused by drugs increased from about 60% to about 90%. Nearly 9 out of 10 poisoning deaths are caused by drugs, and opioid pain medications were involved in more than 40% of all 2008 drug poisoning deaths, up from about 25% in 1999. In 2008, nationally, about 76% of poisoning deaths were unintentional, 16% were suicides, and 8% were of undetermined intent.
