What is Hanukkah?

In 167 B.C., Jews were oppressed by the Greek-Syrian population and leaders of a Jewish rebel army rose up in revolt against their oppressors. The fight lasted three years until the Jewish army regained control of Jerusalem. After their victory, because their temple had been desecrated, they wanted to rebuild and rededicate it. They wanted to light the sacred candelabrum but could only find one container of the oil. In Judaism, a special oil was needed, oil that had the seal of the high priest. Although there was only enough for the menorah lights to burn for one day it stayed lit for eight days and eight nights until they were able to prepare more oil. This is why menorahs are lit.

What is a Menorah?

A menorah is a candelabrum with nine branches or places to put a candle. The eight of the branches represent the eight days of Hanukkah and the ninth branch holds the shamash, or servant candle. The shamash or servant candle is used to light the other eight candles. During Hanukkah the candles are placed in the menorah from right to left, but are lit from left to right and Jews say a prayer each night when they light their menorahs.
