When Robin Roberts of ABC's Good Morning America announced her diagnosis of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), the country responded with an outpouring of support and a sharp increase in people interested in becoming bone marrow donors. Roberts will undergo a life-saving bone marrow transplant to cure her MDS, with her sister as her bone marrow donor.

Not long after Roberts' announcement, her supporters ordered custom bracelets from AmazingWristbands.com with the inspirational message of "Light Love Power Presence." On August 20, Roberts appeared on Good Morning America along with her co-anchors who were all wearing the "Light Love Power Presence" bracelets.

We at Amazing Wristbands are honored to be the vendor of choice for the wristbands supporting Robin Roberts as she undergoes a bone marrow transplant to treat MDS. We applaud her for her strength and courage as well as the awareness she has brought to the issue bone marrow donation.

What is MDS?

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of diseases that affect the bone marrow and blood. According to Be The Match (www.Marrow.org), here are some important statistics about MDS:

Robin Roberts Bracelets
  • About 10,000 to 15,000 people are diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes in the United States each year.
  • More than 80% of cases are in people over age 60. MDS is more common in men than in women.
  • Some types of MDS are mild and easily managed, while other types are severe and life-threatening.
  • Mild MDS can grow more severe over time.
  • MDS is known to develop into a fast-growing, severe leukemia called acute myelogenous leukemia
  • MDS can be caused by treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy for other diseases. This is called treatment-related MDS or secondary MDS. Treatment-related MDS is often more severe and difficult to treat than other forms of MDS.
  • The best treatment for a person with MDS depends on his or her type of MDS, risk level, age, overall health, and his or her own preferences. For high-risk cases of MDS, a bone marrow transplant is the best chance for a cure.
