All the silicone bracelets from AmazingWristbands.com are made of comfortable, latex-free, and non-allergenic silicone. You can add your own message and artwork to sickle cell cancer awareness wristbands to make them specific for your cause of event.

What is Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle Cell Disease is a condition in which there are not enough red blood cells in the body to adequately deliver oxygen to the body. The red blood cells that do exist are abnormally shaped and become rigid and sticky. This combination prevents flow of blood cells and can lead to blockages of small blood vessels. Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic disease which can only be passed on when both parents have the genetic trait. Those most susceptible to Sickle Cell Disease are those whose ethnic heritage originates in Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, Central and South America. In the United States, it most often affects blacks. You can visit the Mayo Clinic to learn more about this disease.

Sickle Cell Disease Symptoms

  • Fatigue caused by breaking apart of red blood cells. This cause them to die out in 20 days on average versus the normal period of 120 days
  • Episodes of pain when blood vessels to the chest, abdomen and joints are blocked. Pain can last for hours or even weeks often requiring hospitalization
  • Swollen hands and feet in infants are early warning signs of the presence of this disease.
  • Frequent infections
  • Delayed growth
  • Vision problems

Although there is no cure for Sickle Cell Disease, treatments are available to lessen the effects of the disease.

Treatments Include

  • Vaccinations – young children should get all vaccinations as those with Sickle Cell are more susceptible to catching other diseases and illness
  • Antibiotics – also for use in preventing other illnesses and infections
  • Pain relieving medications
  • Blood transfusions
  • Supplemental oxygen
  • Stem cell treatments
  • Use of hydroxyurea

September - Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month
