Wristbands To Show Your Support For Women's Equality

Women’s Equality Day

In 1971, Congress appointed August 26 to be the annual date to observe Women’s Equality Day. The date was chosen because it was the same date that, in 1920, the 19th Amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote. In the years since then, Women’s Equality Day has been an opportunity for educators, parents, and individuals to learn more about women’s suffrage and the 19th Amendment. On Women’s Equality Day, the President is authorized and requested to commemorate the women’s suffrage movement.

Use Wristbands for Women’s Equality Day

This year is the 45th anniversary of Women’s Equality Day—and it’s a Presidential election year, one in which a woman is running for President. So it’s a great opportunity to raise awareness about Women’s Equality Day and to educate people about the 19th Amendment. Teachers and parents are encouraged to help their kids understand the suffrage movement and the history behind Women’s Equality Day—one great way to make the lesson more memorable is with silicone wristbands. Wristbands can be customized with color, images, and even glow-in-the-dark or glitter effects. They can also have specific messages imprinted on them to help kids remember key facts. For example, they could say "August 26, 1971—Women’s Equality Day" or "Winning the Vote—the 19th Amendment" or "Vote for Women".

About Women’s Equality Day

According to the National Women’s History Museum, the women’s suffrage amendment was first introduced to Congress on January 10, 1878, and it took until June 1919 to receive approval from the House and the Senate. Over the next year, suffragists lobbied states to get the amendment ratified, which finally occurred on August 26, 1920. But the movement didn’t stop there. Over the next 50 years, women worked hard to achieve equality, in fact, even holding a strike in 1970. A year later, Representative Bella Abzug presented a bill to designate August 26 as an annual observance of equality, and thus Women’s Equality Day was born.
